Hinterland: Land or area adjacent to a town or
port that supply it with goods and other services like trade, transportation
etc. are termed as ‘Hinterland’.
Garrison
Town: A fortified
town with settlements of soldiers.
Muqti,
Iqta, Iqtadar: The
Khalji and Tughluq rulers appointed military commanders as holders of their
various territories. Such territories were called ‘Iqta’ and their holders
(military commanders who were granted lands of these territories) were called
as ‘Iqtadar’ or ‘Muqti’. Their duties included -
- To lead military campaigns in
order to maintain law and order in their iqtas.
- In exchange they had to collect fixed
revenues from the people living in their territories.
- From the revenue collected,
muqtis had to pay his soldiers, take his own salary and give the remaining
to the Sultanate.
Qibla: The position of a person’s standing
facing Mecca while offering Namaz (prayer) is called ‘Qibla’.

Razia Sultan of Delhi Sultanate was
the first and the only Muslim woman ruler of India. She reigned from
1236 to 1240. Iltutmish appointed his daughter, Razia as his successor.

The three main types of taxes collected by the Delhi Sultans were -
